Why it exists

The idea came from the puzzle books you buy at a station: a bit of everything, no commitment, and something to do with fifteen minutes. What those books do badly is run out — and what puzzle apps usually do badly is make you install a different one for every kind of puzzle you like.

So Winters Puzzles is one app with a lot of puzzles in it, where the boards are generated rather than drawn from a finite pack. There is no last page. If you finish a Sudoku there is another Sudoku, and if you are tired of Sudoku there are 31 other things to do instead.

How it is built

Nearly every puzzle is generated on your device and checked before you see it. A Sudoku or a Nonogram is verified to have exactly one solution; Minesweeper boards are built so they can always be cleared without guessing; Gridlock’s par is the genuine minimum number of moves for that exact board.

That verification is the expensive part, and it is the part most worth doing. A puzzle that cannot be solved by reasoning is not a hard puzzle — it is a broken one, and it is the fastest way to lose somebody’s trust.

The card games are the deliberate exception. Solitaire and Spider deals are a real shuffle, so some of them cannot be won — which is also true of a physical deck, and part of the game.
